Art Haunted Media Alfred Hickling Thursday February 26, 2004 The Guardian Whenever a new form of technology becomes available, there will always be a certain breed of fanatic ready to suggest that it opens a channel to paranormal activity. This exhibition attempts to discover whether ghosts really do live in machines. The oldest and most influential work here is Susan Hiller's Belshazzar's Feast, a video of a bonfire overlayed with chanting, which spooked quite a few people when shown by Channel 4 in the 1980s. Patrick Ward's piece works on a similar principle - a TV signal dissolving into static, which is supposed to "signal communication with an unknown force"; though it could mean that his aerial simply needs adjusting. Susan Collins attempts to find out if ghosts show up on webcams by broadcasting a live feed from an empty room in Sheffield's most haunted pub. It is accompanied by an inaudible soundtrack on the so-called "fear frequency" of 19Hz; just below the level of human hearing but said to induce "discomfort, dizziness, fear and even panic attacks". You have been warned. The audio-artist Scanner also explores the fear frequency, with field recordings from frightening places; while S Mark Gubb invites you to do what thousands of adolescents have attempted in their bedrooms, and to see if you can pick up subliminal commands from Led Zeppelin IV played backwards. Thomson and Craighead have designed a haunted website, but the day I visited, the cyber-poltergeist had crashed it. They also present a video of a seance in which nothing much seems to happen, but I suppose one is to conclude here that the medium is the message. · Until March 20. Details: 0114-281 2077.
