Book Your Own Fuckin’ Exhibition
We all know DIY is best. Waiting for it to happen is a road to nowhere. Making it happen for yourself isn’t just empowering and proactive, it’s also fun and constructive. You’re helping build something new rather than just being guest in someone else’s house.
In the early 90s, before the internet ever existed and people were reliant on pens/paper and phones, Maximum Rocknroll used to put out a zine/publication called ‘Book Your Own Fuckin’ Life’, which was an essential resource for DIY bands, venues, and promoters the world over - a list of contacts for bands, venues, promoters, labels, zines, radio stations, hang-outs - everything you’d need to tour and get your band’s name and material out there. (Here’s an article if you want to know more…)
I figure, why we can’t do something like that for artists?
We’re all for looking for new places to show our work and new networks to step into, so let’s just make a great-big list of places and opportunities where we can do this for ourselves.
Do you have a hall, a space, a window, a fridge, a radio show, a website, a podcast, a bag you can pin a badge on? Let’s be creative! List ANY SPACE AT ALL you think someone might be interested to place an artwork on/in/through and that you can facilitate.
It’s going to HAVE to be open-source as I can’t commit to updating it, so this also means there’s loads of room for it to get messed up, as anybody will be able to update it. Let’s just start and see how it goes…
Here’s a link to the online excel spreadsheet.
Please read ALL of the instructions/guidance on the front sheet for editing it as it’ll quickly become chaotic and useuless otherwise.
Now go and book your own fuckin’ exhibition!
