The Church of Noise is a programme of gigs, talks, and screenings, celebrating DIY culture, scenes, and creativity, taking place at ArtHole in Canton.
Mae’r ‘Church of Noise’ yw rhaglen o gyngherddau, siaradwyr a dangosiadau, sy’n dathlu diwylliant DIY, golygfeydd, a chreadigrwydd, sy’n digwydd yn Arthole yn Nhreganna.
Gigs include a night of Noise performances and collaborations curated by Violet Green, a four-bill hardcore show, curated by local hardcore collective Undod, and the band The NaNaz will be performing as part of an exhibition launch for US punk photographer Julia Gorton.

Julia Gorton will be joining us from the US to bring her ‘Portrait Studio’ project to Cardiff for the first time. Through this project she documents anyone and everyone who wants to be photographed within a city’s subcultural scene, creating an archive of the people, the scene, and the moment. She started her career as the photographer/creative director/publisher of the No Wave fanzine ‘Beat It!’ which focused on the Downtown New York music scene in the late 70s – a formative time and scene for global music culture. Her photos of musicians have been seen in magazines, books, and exhibitions across the world.
Bydd Julia Gorton yn ymuno â ni o’r UDA i ddod â’i phrosiect ‘Porthoriaeth Stiwdio’ i Gaerdydd am y tro gyntaf. Trwy gydol y prosiect mae hi’n ddogfenni phawb ac unrhyw un sy’n hapus i gael ei ffotograff o fewn sîn is ddiwylliannol dinasydd, sydd yn creu archif o’r bobl, y sîn a’r foment. Wnaeth hi ddechrau ei gyfra fel ffotograffydd/cyfarwyddyd creadigol/cyhoeddwr o’r fanzine No Wave ‘Beat It!’, sy’n ffocysu ar y sîn cerddoriaeth ganol ddinas Efrog Newydd yn y 70au hwyr - cyfnod ffurfiannol a sîn ar gyfer diwylliant cerddoriaeth fyd-eang. Mae ei luniau wedi’i chael ei weld mewn cylchgronau, llyfrau ac arddangosfeydd ar draws y byd.
Free afternoon film screenings include Joerg Steineck’s ‘Lo Sound Desert’ about the desert rock scene that emerged in the Californian desert and gave the world the likes of Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age; Julia Ostertag/Francesca Araiza Andrade’s ‘Noise and Resistance’, which portrays a globally interconnected and political music scene, built on autonomy and solidarity; and the cult classic ‘In Bed with Chris Needham’, following the life of a young student in Lougborough as they attempt to get a heavy metal band off the ground.

There will be an in-conversation event, ‘Build Your Own DIY Utopia: In Conversation with Rockaway Park and The 309 Punk Project’, with Scott Satterwhite and Valerie George, directors of The 309 Punk Project (Pensacola, Florida) and Mark Wilson, founder of Rockaway Park near Bristol. The event will discuss the projects and communities they’ve built within the context of radical and transformational DIY activity.

The programme launches on the evening of Monday 12th with a night of poets and poetry, curated by Patrick Jones, where there will also be a chance for people to sign up and perform.

Alongside all of this, Cardiff Music History archive reimagines their 2023 exhibition, ‘The Wasteland of My Fathers’ - about the history of Welsh punk rock - through a poster-zine-hybrid installation.

Legendary subcultural photographer, Julia Gorton, is in Cardiff and wants to take your picture! The portraits taken at ArtHole across these days will form her exhibition that opens to the public on Friday night.

Joërg Steineck’s ‘Lo Sound Desert’ is a documentary about the DIY music scene in the low desert of California. What was started out of boredom by revolting punk rock kids, hidden from narrow-minded authorities of sub-urban desert communities in the early 80s, gave birth to bands like Kyuss and Queens Of The Stone Age. The film provides an intimate insight into the attitude of the Coachella Valley’s music scene – from jamming all night in the middle of a surreal desert landscape to headlining European stages – desert rock continued its underground spread and became an international treasure. ‘Lo Sound Desert’ is narrated by Josh Homme, Mario Lalli, Brant Bjork, Alfredo Hernandez, Scott Reeder, Sean Wheeler and many more from bands such as Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age, Yawning Man, Fatso Jetson, Dali’s Llama, Mondo Generator.

Julia Ostertag/Francesca Araiza Andrade’s ‘Noise and Resistance’ is an inspiring journey through Europe’s contemporary utopia, to subcultural places of longing, where independence creates community. A document of a globally connected political music scene based on autonomy and solidarity, practicing strategies against capitalism and mainstream culture. With authenticity and complexity the filmmakers follow members of this scene – their motivations, shared longings and utopias – showing how they create a parallel universe that functions according to its own rules. Whether squatters in Barcelona, anti-fascists in Moscow, residents of self-managed trailer parks, or activists from the CRASS collective – they are all brought by a common denominator: music as a means of protest.

This event brings together Scott Satterwhite and Valerie George - from The 309 Punk Project in Pensacola, Florida, USA (a non-profit organisation based in the oldest surviving punk house in the southern-American states) – together with Mark Wilson – founding member of The Mob and Rockaway Park in Somerset (a subversive gem hidden in a disused quarry in rural Somerset offering community gardens, cafes, galleries, accommodation, and events in a sustainable, creative environment) – in conversation with Church of Noise organiser, Mark Gubb. The event will discuss their projects and the communities they’ve built within the context of radical and transformational DIY activity.

In 1992, Chris Needham was a bored 17-year-old thrash metal freak with a mullet, a bumfluff moustache, and a bedroom in his parents’ house in Loughborough. He noticed an advert from the BBC in the TV Times asking for people to film video diaries of their lives. The result was this – ‘In Bed With Chris Needham’ - the defining document of what it means to be young, bored, and metal in a small British town. Hailed by Kerrang! as ‘the greatest documentary ever made’ IBWCN is part coming-of-age video diary, part reality-TV forebear; a sweet and unintentionally-hilarious 50-minute doc that everyone who grew up bored in a small town can connect with. As Chris says in the dying embers of his masterwork, “I’m sure you were all teenagers once… I’m sure we always will be… some of us.”
